Nicolas Cage has been so prolific and so undiscriminating in his choice of projects in recent years (after an impressive early career highlighted by his best actor Oscar for 1995?s Leaving Las Vegas) that we approach each new Cage opening with expectations pretty much stuck at low tide.

So it?s both surprising and gratifying to report that his latest starring vehicle is not only bearable but respectable and watchable.

As a variation on the Death Wish formula, Seeking Justice seeks to get under your skin and it does so, efficiently and effectively.

Originally titled The Hungry Rabbit Jumps (for reasons that become clear as the narrative unfolds), it?s a plot-driven urban crime thriller about Will Gerard, a post-Katrina New Orleans high school English teacher played by Cage, whose wife Laura, a concert cellist played by January Jones, is brutally assaulted and raped.

While waiting at the hospital for news of her condition, he?s approached by Simon, played by Guy Pearce, who tells Will that he?ll get minimal if any help from the Big Easy?s police force or legal system, and claims to know who the assailant was and to represent an underground vigilante organization, a justice-seeking citizens group that ?deals with people? and that offers violent retribution.

Simon offers Will a deal: he?ll arrange to have a complete stranger exact revenge on Laura?s rapist.? In exchange, Will will be called on to do a return favor at some point in the future.

Initially reluctant, distraught Will gives in to his feelings of rage and agrees, but does not tell his wife.

Sure enough, as life gets back to normal, Laura?s attacker ends up meeting with an unfortunate ?accident? and dies, allowing Will to relax with the knowledge that justice has been served.

And, sure enough, Will is eventually called upon to murder a suspected criminal as payback ? and is not free to refuse the assignment, as a conspiracy slowly unfolds.

Collaborating with producer Tobey Maguire, New Zealander Roger Donaldson ? veteran director of The Bank Job, The Recruit, Thirteen Days, and The World?s Fastest Indian ? works from Robert Tannen?s intriguing if ultimately undeveloped script about vigilante justice which somewhat hypocritically disapproves of vigilantism while exploiting its excesses, and is only superficially interested in the moral quandary that stays buried under the narrative.

But a decent amount of suspense is generated, at least until the late going, when the film devolves into a generic chase flick and what has heretofore been a fairly convincing series of events suddenly steps over the preposterousness line.

A shame, that, because the thought-provoking premise deserves a more thoughtful third act and resolution.

As for Cage, who in recent years has turned himself into Mr. Quantity-instead-of-Quality but continues to seek justice from onlookers, he actually and uncharacteristically dials down the intensity level (that is, the signature shouting and manic energy) and does what for him is probably best described as ?underplaying.?

So we?ll seek just 2? stars out of 4 for an absorbing revenge thriller that has something a little different up its sleeve.? This time, Cage is on the cagy side.? Ditto for Seeking Justice.

Departing Goldman banker slams ''rip-off'' culture

LONDON/NEW YORK (Reuters) - Goldman Sachs faced an unprecedented assault from one of its own on Wednesday after a banker published a withering resignation letter in the New York Times, calling the Wall Street titan a "toxic" place where managing directors referred to their own clients as "muppets."

It was the latest blow for the investment bank. The company -- dubbed a "great vampire squid" in a 2009 article in Rolling Stone magazine -- has been embroiled in the biggest-ever insider trading scandal on Wall Street. And just weeks ago, a top judge criticized Goldman for big conflicts of interest in an energy deal.

In an opinion column in Wednesday's Times, Greg Smith, who worked in equity derivatives, said Goldman had become "as toxic and destructive as I have ever seen it.

"It makes me ill how callously people talk about ripping their clients off. Over the last 12 months I have seen five different managing directors refer to their own clients as 'muppets,'" Smith said.

In the United States "muppet" brings to mind lovable puppets like Kermit the Frog, but in Britain, "muppet" is slang for a stupid person. (Goldman, as it happens, was at one time also the bank for the family of Muppets creator Jim Henson.)

Goldman Sachs issued a short statement in response:

"We disagree with the views expressed, which we don't think reflect the way we run our business.?In our view, we will only be successful if our clients are successful.?This fundamental truth lies at the heart of how we conduct ourselves."

In a memo to staff, Goldman Chief Executive Lloyd Blankfein and Chief Operating Officer Gary Cohn said Smith's views were in the minority among his 12,000 fellow vice presidents.

"And, what do our people think about how we interact with our clients??Across the firm at all levels, 89 percent of you said that the firm provides exceptional service to them," they said in the memo, a copy of which was reviewed by Reuters.

Congressman Barney Frank, an architect of the 2010 Dodd-Frank financial reform law, said Smith's piece would have "a big impact" on the banking industry's efforts to push back against financial reform.

"It puts the burden on Goldman Sachs and others to show us how what they do benefits the clients and therefore the broader economy," he told Reuters.

Goldman shares closed 3.3 percent lower, on a day when broader markets were up slightly. At least one bank wasted no time in trying to take advantage of the situation.

"In my experience ... client success and firm success can peacefully coexist; in fact thrive," Harris Private Bank Chief Investment Officer Jack Ablin said in an open letter.

"Having served clients for nearly 30 years I can tell you that the long-term success of any institution, whether in the financial field or not, depends on the long-term success and satisfaction of its clients," said Ablin, who oversees $60 billion of investments for individuals and families.

But the company, which sometimes lacks for defenders, garnered at least some public support in response to Smith.

"The many people we have dealt with there have all been exceptionally talented and high-grade, and never once have we had a negative experience in which we felt that they took advantage of us or didn't do what they said they would do," well-known fund manager Whitney Tilson said in a note.

FRIENDLY AND GENUINE?

Smith, who did not return voice mails on his cellphone, carried the title of executive director, but it was not nearly as illustrious as it might sound. Goldman's roughly 12,000 vice presidents and executive directors compare with 450 managing directors -- the next rung up in the Goldman hierarchy and a job classification that Smith didn't achieve. Overall, the company has about 33,000 employees, meaning that 36 percent of Goldman's workforce carried a title similar to Smith's.

South African David Berman, founder of hedge fund Durban Capital and friends with Smith, called him "a very understated, humble type of guy who would tell the truth as truth is important to him.

"But he never struck me as the Goldman-type as he isn't aggressive nor (the) salesman type one expects," Berman said, adding, "I am convinced this is for real with no selfish intent here."

According to the British Financial Services Authority's register, Smith joined Goldman's UK unit a year ago.

Johannesburg-born Smith attended universities in his home country and in the United States, where he received a degree in economics from Stanford University in 2001. He also interviewed to be a Rhodes Scholar in South Africa in 2002.

While at student at Stanford he had a summer internship at Paine Webber in 1999 and a summer internship at Goldman in 2000. Upon graduating from Stanford in 2001, he landed at Goldman.

Internally, Smith's op-ed piece was not necessarily well received. A trader, who knew Smith in passing, said the company is telling staff that Smith is a disgruntled employee who is leaving because he didn't make managing director.

This trader, who did not want to be named, says former Goldman colleagues are saying that Smith "wasn't very commercial," which means he wasn't producing the kind of sales the company wanted.

PAST MEDIA STORMS

Goldman Sachs -- fourth among investment banks last year based on fee-income rankings compiled by Thomson Reuters and Freeman Consulting -- has a history of tension with client interests, experts say.

"Greg Smith refers to the last 12 years, but in fact Goldman has been doing this kind of thing since going back to the Great Depression," author William Cohan told Reuters Insider.

"It's not just the last 12 years; unfortunately it's part of the firm's DNA," said Cohan, author of the Goldman profile "Money and Power" and a former Wall Street banker himself.

In recent years the company has faced other high-profile incidents damaging to its image after the near-collapse of the global banking system in 2008.

Earlier this month it was accused of a major conflict of interest for advising El Paso Corp on its sale to Kinder Morgan, while being a significant shareholder in Kinder.

A lawyer representing an Australian fund in a lawsuit against Goldman over mortgage-backed securities, filed in New York last year and alleging fraud and breach of contract, said he may seek Smith's deposition to help bolster his case.

Over the weekend, I participated in the UCLA tradition "Dinner for 12 Strangers." The tradition began over 40 years ago with just two dinners. In 2011, there were over 290 dinners and 3,100 participants. The dinners are an informal gathering of students, faculty and alumni over delicious food and stimulating conversation.

I had known about this tradition back when I was in high school and this was always on my UCLA bucket list. As a Dinner for 12 Strangers first-timer, I was anxious and hopeful for what the next few hours would be like. When I pulled into the host's driveway in Hermosa Beach, I looked in awe at the stunning beach home neighborhood. One of the hosts greeted us with a wide-smile and led us to the top deck of her home. There, we watched the California sunset. I was astounded by the beautiful view and wondered if someday I will be fortunate enough to have a home with this view.

The night began with the ice breaker "celebrity" in which each person is labeled with a famous character name. I had asked if my name was an athlete and given the confused faces of some of the girls, I instantly knew the name. I was the famous former UCLA athlete and NBA Hall-of-Famer, Kareem Abdul-Jabbar.

The two hosts met on the first day of math lecture. They sat next to each other and are still friends to this day. They were there for weddings, birthdays and births. In college, they worked at the university residential halls and on-campus cafes. They lived in on-campus and off-campus housing. They participated in college traditions and one host was in a sorority. UCLA is a dry campus and we learned that back then, sororities and fraternities weren't dry. As we listened to their stories about what UCLA was like in the late-1970s and early-1980s, we were astounded by how much the university has changed and how much has stayed the same.

The village where UCLA students dined, Westwood Village, had completely different eateries compared to the In'N'Out and Diddy Riese that students flock to today. We asked how labs were done when they were in college and learned about college life with typewriters. We told them about how many buildings have changed names, the undie run tradition during finals week and new residential halls built on campus.

Through the night, I started to reflect back on my college experience and wondered about the fabulous friendships I have made in the past. The hosts emphasized that the people you meet in your life, whether you meet them in high school or in college, will be your friends for the rest of your life. With less than a year left in college, I wondered if someday I will form lasting friendships with the people who will be in my future lecture classes.

With technology and Facebook, it's simple to keep in touch but an impersonal 'hey' or 'what's up' seems to lose its meaning over time. On the car ride back to UCLA, we discussed friend requests on Facebook. One guy mentioned the awkward moment when you are Facebook friends with someone but over time, you lose touch and soon forget how you even met.

At the end of the night, I was stuffed with delicious homemade Mexican food, a doggy bag of homemade brownies and thoughts of what I will say when I will host a dinner sometime in the future. At the beginning of the night, we were students, faculty and alumni with different lives, interests and majors. By the end of the night, our lives came together with a shared memory and a shared experience.

Prepaid debit card: new disclosure on fees

Prepaid debit card from three major issuers will now come with specific disclosures on fees. The disclosure 'box' being tested aims to help users understand costs of using a prepaid debit card. ?

Three major issuers of?prepaid?debit?cards said Tuesday they will test a new fee-disclosure box designed to help people understand the costs of using cards to access their money.

The disclosure box, designed by a non-profit group focused on people who don't have bank accounts, aims to improve the transparency of the increasingly popular cards.?Prepaid?cards are similar to?debit?cards but are not attached to an underlying checking account.

The Center for Financial Services Innovation also called on regulators to improve disclosures and other consumer protections for?prepaid?card users.

"Consumers need to be able to easily determine the true cost of a?prepaid?card and compare different products before deciding which to purchase," said David Newville, CFSI's policy manager, in a statement. He said a standardized disclosure "will ultimately attract more consumers to?prepaid?cards."

CFSI is funded in part by banks and other financial companies that sell financial products and services to people who don't have bank accounts.

The companies testing the fee disclosure are Green Dot Corp., Plastyc Inc. and Ready Credit Corp. Green Dot, the biggest publicly traded issuer of?prepaid?cards, said it will add the box to its card package this fall.

"Consumers should not have to worry about surprise fees hidden deep within cardholder agreements," Green Dot CEO Steve Streit said in a statement.

Prepaid?cards have been criticized by consumer advocates because some of them carry higher fees that what banks charge for comparable services. However, research funded by the?prepaid?card industry has found that prepaid debit card users often pay less than people who have checking accounts with low balances.

Prepaid?cards are regulated separately from?debit?cards. They do not always offer the same protections against fraud and theft that credit and?debit?cards do.

The Consumer Financial Protection Bureau has the authority to write rules governing?prepaid?cards. The agency, created under the 2010 overhaul of financial rules, regulates broad categories of consumer financial products and services.

The bureau is considering adding?prepaid?card companies to the list of industries that it can monitor and supervise on-site, according to a public notice published last year.

In its release, CFSI called on the bureau to "do consumer testing of?prepaid?disclosures."

A bureau spokeswoman declined to comment on the proposed fee disclosure or on any agency plans involvingprepaid?cards.

CFSI president and CEO Jennifer Tescher is set to testify Wednesday at a Senate subcommittee hearing aboutprepaid?cards.

Researchers found how to stop low back pain

Italian researchers at the Catholic University of Sacred Heart in Rome found an important molecular mechanism responsible for low back pain and other acute vertebral problems like cervical axial pain, all due to aging and degeneration of the vertebral column.

The team led by Dr. Luigi Aurelio Nasto and Enrico Pola also developed an experimental drug to inhibit this degenerative mechanism, by blocking its principal culprit, the molecule, "NF-kB" and tested it successfully in mice. The study was carried out in collaboration with the University of Pittsburgh research team led by Paul Robbins, James Kang and Nam Vo.

Researchers reported their findings in the February 16 online edition of the journal Spine.

Nasto and Pola found that high concentration of NF-kB causes the degeneration of intervertebral discs (the structures that separate and damp the vertebrae), a degenerative process that could affect also young adults (30 year old), especially if they adopt a sedentary lifestyle. In other words when NF-kB becomes overactive, it triggers a series of deleterious reactions that ultimately affect the physiological structure of the vertebral column.

Due to aging, obesity and sedentary lifestyle, intervertebral discs degenerate, leading to the progressive stiffening of the column. The intervertebral disc degeneration is responsible for syndromes such as chronic low back pain or neck pain that affects a large proportion of the adult population.

The researchers found that NF-kB plays a role in the degeneration of the spine. NF-kB is a transcription factor, it modulates the activation of specific target genes. Researchers found that NF-kB activates many genes related to inflammation and turn off anti-inflammatory protective genes. Moreover in many studies NF-kB was found hyperactive in both the spines of old mice and old people.

The results of the Italian research suggest that NF-kB induces the onset of deleterious inflammatory processes and inhibit anti-inflammatory mechanisms. Moreover "our study shows that by inhibiting NF-kB, we can stop spine degeneration", Dr. Nasto says. "Drugs that turn off or even only partially inactivate NF-kB could be used to prevent the degeneration of intervertebral discs in patients."

"In our study, we developed a specific drug, called NBD peptide, able to specifically inhibit the deleterious action of NF-kB ? dr Pola explains. NBD has been already successfully tested by a US team in Pittsburgh to slow the course of muscular dystrophy in an animal model (NF-kB is also involved in this disease). This peptide will be soon tested in a clinical trial (phase I) to study its therapeutic effects on Duchenne muscular dystrophy".

According to Nasto and Pola, NBD may also be used to counteract the aging of the vertebral column. "We hope to develop other selective inhibitors of NF-kB to slow the degeneration of intervertebral discs" and cure low back pain, Pola concludes.

Greece eyes 1 billion euro stimulus from EIB: PM adviser

ATHENS (Reuters) - Greece hopes to get 1 billion euros ($1.31 billion) in financing from the European Investment Bank (EIB) this year as a stimulus for its ailing economy, a senior official said on Saturday.

Greece and the European Commission are pushing the EIB, the European Union's long-term investment arm, to disburse the funds, said Gikas Hardouvelis, top economic adviser to Prime Minister Lucas Papademos.

"I believe in the end it will happen," Hardouvelis told Greece's Mega television, adding the EIB might channel the money into the Greek economy through local banks.

After the success of a debt cut plan on Friday, which opens the way for a 130-billion euro international bailout, Athens is looking for ways to kick-start its stricken economy, now in its fifth year of recession.

Austerity measures associated with its second international bailout in two years have plunged the Greek economy into its longest and deepest slump since World War Two.

Gross domestic product shrank by a record 7 percent in 2011, data showed on Friday. Investment slumped by 21 percent after a 15 percent slide in 2010.

"The faster we do it, the better. The economy is sinking and everyone is too scared (to invest)," Hardouvelis said.

But the EIB was still worried about getting too exposed to Greece and a solution to overcome its reluctance might be to disburse the funds using local banks as intermediaries, he said.

Deeper view of HIV reveals impact of early mutations

Mutations in HIV that develop during the first few weeks of infection may play a critical role in undermining a successful early immune response, a finding that reveals the importance of vaccines targeting regions of the virus that are less likely to mutate. A new study in the journal PLoS Pathogens, led by researchers at the Ragon Institute of Massachusetts General Hospital, MIT and Harvard and the Broad Institute of MIT and Harvard, applied the same next-generation technologies that have revolutionized sequencing of the human genome to study how HIV adapts within the first few weeks after infection.

Ragon and Broad investigators applied an approach called pyrosequencing that allows the simultaneous sequencing of hundreds of viral variants within an individual over the course of infection. These data provided a substantially deeper and more sensitive view of the complexity of mutant strains circulating in a patient following HIV infection and how each of those strains evolves over time. Combining these genetic data with detailed immunological analyses enabled a comprehensive evaluation of viral-host interactions during the critical acute phase of HIV infection.

The study revealed that the majority of early, low-frequency mutations developing during the first few weeks after infection represent rapid adaptations to avoid the response of CD8 'killer' T cells, which play a key role in recognizing and eliminating HIV-infected cells. "These data reveal the ability of HIV to rapidly avoid front-line immune responses attempting to contain the infection," says Todd Allen, PhD, senior author of the study and a Ragon Institute faculty member.

More importantly, Allen notes, their study revealed that rapid viral escape from a few dominant immune responses coincided with the inability of individual patients to maintain early control of HIV. "The ability to sensitively assess early virus evolution across the entire HIV genome revealed that limiting the ability of HIV to become resistant to the earliest immune responses may be a critical component of a successful vaccine," he says. "Therefore, the key to controlling a highly variable pathogen such as HIV may lie in a vaccine's ability to redirect immune responses towards more critical, highly conserved regions of the virus that are unable to successfully mutate."

An important component of the study was development of novel bioinformatics tools to handle the enormous and highly diverse sequence dataset and to assemble the thousands of sequencing reads into complete HIV genomes for analysis and detection of genetic mutations. While next-generation sequencing approaches have helped transform the sequencing of mammalian genomes, the high degree of sequence diversity within and between HIV strains has hindered the routine application of those powerful sequencing approaches to highly variable pathogens such as HIV. In the current study the researchers were able to apply their approach to successfully sequence the entire HIV genome from dozens of infected individuals.

"The genomic and computational tools developed as part of this study allow researchers to interrogate the complete HIV genome and to identify genetic variants of the virus with unprecedented resolution, allowing us to obtain a novel map of how the virus is changing during the course of an infection.? says Matthew Henn, PhD, the lead author of the study and director of Viral Genomics at the Broad Institute.

Efforts to develop an effective vaccine against HIV have been thwarted in large part because of the virus's ability to rapidly mutate and avoid host immune responses. However, notes Allen ? an associate professor of Medicine at Harvard Medical School ? "HIV is not able to mutate at will. Some of these mutations substantially cripple the virus? ability to replicate, which appears to be critical to enabling a few individuals to uniquely control HIV without the need for therapy."

Understanding more precisely how HIV evolves in an individual and how mutations correlate with the ability to control HIV may provide critical insight into the design of more effective vaccines to contain and possibly prevent infection altogether. Efforts are underway at the Ragon Institute to harness these findings to develop and test novel vaccine approaches against HIV that limit its ability to mutate and escape immune control.
