ABSTRACT

Background/Aims: The prognostic significance of extranodal metastasis (ENM) in colorectal cancer (CRC) is disregarded by the TNM classification system. The influence of ENM on survival among locally advanced CRC patients was examined. Methodology: We reviewed retrospectively the clinical course of 263 patients who underwent surgical resection of locally advanced CRC at our Department between 2005 and 2009. We analyzed the prognostic factors with special reference to the clinicopathological factors of primary tumors.
Results: Thirty-eight cases of ENM were detected among patients with CRC. Compared with ENMnegative cancers, ENM-positive cancers were associated with poorer tumor differentiation grade (p=0.026) and higher prevalence of TNM-stage (p Conclusions: ENM appears to be a strong independent negative prognostic factor of poor survival in locally advanced CRC.

Friday

Citigroup (NYSE:C) sold 145.3 million shares (657.56 rupees apiece) of Housing Development Finance Corp., which constituted its total investment in India?s largest mortgage lender, for a total of $1.9 billion. This was at a 6 percent discount to HDFC?s closing price yesterday

Lloyds? (NYSE:LYG) says it expects 2012 to ?remain challenging,? citing Britain?s ?subdued? economy, regulatory scrutiny and market uncertainty. It had expected a ?4 billion pre-tax loss, but suffered a ?3.5 billion loss instead, which takes a ?3.2 billion one-off provision for the PPI scandal into consideration. Additionally, its bonus pool was cut 30 percent to ?375 million, Core Tier 1 capital ratio was up 60 basis points to 10.8 percent, and income down 10 million to ?21.1 billion, which is project to fall again in 2012.

H&R Block (NYSE:HRB) comments that, ?It is still early, but we believe that we are clearly on pace to gain share in both our retail and digital channels this tax season.?, as it announces that a 16.7 percent year-to-year rise in digital returns have prompted its total prepared tax returns to jum 6.7 percent in this tax season to date.

A fourth quarter earnings report has caused AIG (NYSE:AIG) shares to rise quickly. The U.S. Treasury got $29 per share when it sold a portion of its AIG holdings in a ?re-IPO? in may 2011, but shares briefly topped that price Friday. Treasury still retains a 77 percent stake, and if AIG shares can stay hold near that price, it will probably try another sale. However, Bernstein points out that the price point might diminish further rise in the shares.

Jog cuts at Bank of Montreal (NYSE:BMO) include traders within BMO Capital Markets? equity, foreign-exchange and mortgage-banking operations, according to an executive with the bank. The total number of those employees impacted is sixty.

Shareholders are apparently not satisfied with Aetna?s (NYSE:AET) announcement of a new $750 million stock buyback plan, which increases its total available authorization to $1.045 billion. So far this year approximately $127 million worth of shares have been repurchased.

Solving a spintronic mystery: Researchers resolve controversy over gallium manganese arsenide that could boost spintronic performance

ScienceDaily (Feb. 27, 2012) ? A long-standing controversy regarding the semiconductor gallium manganese arsenide, one of the most promising materials for spintronic technology, looks to have been resolved. Researchers with the U.S. Department of Energy's Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory (Berkeley Lab)in collaboration with scientist from University of Notre Dame have determined the origin of the charge-carriers responsible for the ferromagnetic properties that make gallium manganese arsenide such a hot commodity for spintronic devices. Such devices utilize electron spin rather than charge to read and write data, resulting in smaller, faster and much cheaper data storage and processing.

Wladek Walukiewicz, a physicist with Berkeley Lab's Materials Sciences Division and Margaret Dobrowolska, a physicist at Notre Dame, led a study in which it was shown that the holes (positively-charged energy spaces) in gallium manganese arsenide that control the Curie temperature, the temperature at which magnetism is lost, are located in an impurity energy band rather than a valence energy band, as many scientists have argued. This finding opens the possibility of fabricating gallium manganese arsenide so as to expand the width and occupation of the impurity band and thereby boost the Curie temperature to improve spintronic potential.

"Our results challenge the valence band picture for gallium manganese arsenide and point to the existence of an impurity band, created by even moderate to high doping levels of manganese," Walukiewicz says. "It is the location and partially localized nature of holes within this impurity band that drives the value of the Curie temperature."

The results of this study have been published in the journal Nature Materials in a paper titled "Controlling the Curie temperature in (Ga,Mn)As through location of the Fermi level within the impurity band." Co-authoring the paper with Walukiewicz and Dobrowolska were Kritsanu Tivakornsasithorn, Xinyu Liu, Jacek Furdyna, Mona Berciu and Kin Man Yu.

As a commercial semiconductor, gallium arsenide is second only to silicon. Substitute some of the gallium atoms with atoms of manganese and you get a ferromagnetic semiconductor that is well-suited for spintronic devices. While it has been established that the ferromagnetism of gallium manganese arsenide is hole-mediated, the nature of the hole-states, which has a direct and crucial bearing on its Curie temperature, has been vigorously debated.

In semiconductors and other solid-state materials, the valence band is the range of energies in which the movement of charge is determined by availability of holes. Doping gallium arsenide with manganese can create an impurity band that depletes the valence band and shifts the Fermi level, the energy level at which the electronic states below are filled and those states above are empty.

"The question has been whether the holes mediating the interactions of manganese spins reside in a delocalized valence band, or in a manganese-derived partially localized impurity band," Walukiewicz says. "The valence band model assumes that a separate impurity band does not exist for manganese concentrations higher than about two-percent."

Walukiewicz and his co-authors addressed the issue through channeling experiments that measured the concentrations of manganese atoms and holes relevant to the ferromagnetic order in gallium manganese arsenide. These experiments were carried out at Berkeley Lab's Rutherford Backscattering facility, which is operated under the direction of co-author Kin Man Yu. The results of these experiments were then combined with magnetization, transport and magneto-optical data performed at the University of Notre Dame.

"We were able to determine where the manganese atoms were located, what fraction of this total replaced gallium and acted as electron acceptors (meaning they created ferromagnetic-mediating holes), and what fraction was in the interstitial sites, acting as positively-charged double donors compensating for a fraction of manganese acceptors," Walukiewicz says. "Taking all our data together, we find that the Curie temperature of gallium manganese arsenide can be understood only by assuming that its ferromagnetism is mediated by holes residing in the impurity band, and that it is the location of the Fermi level within the impurity band that determines the Curie temperature."

Electron spin is a quantum mechanical property arising from the magnetic moment of a spinning electron. Spin carries a directional value of either "up" or "down" and can be used to encode data in the 0s and 1s of the binary system. Walukiewicz says that understanding the factors that control the Curie temperature can serve as a guide for strategies to optimize ferromagnetic materials for spintronic applications.

"For example, with appropriate control of the manganese ions, either co-doping with donor ions, or modulation doping, we can engineer the location of the Fermi level within the impurity band to best the advantage," he says.

Walukiewicz says the findings of this study further suggest that it should be possible to optimize magnetic coupling and Curie temperature for the whole family of ferromagnetic semiconductors by tuning the binding energy of the acceptor ions.

This research was supported in part by the DOE Office of Science, and by grants from the National Science Foundation, the Natural Sciences and Engineering Research Council of Canada, and the Canadian Institute for Advanced Research.

99% A Separation

All Critics (113) | Top Critics (37) | Fresh (112) | Rotten (1) | DVD (2)

These people seem so real they might live next door. And they probably do.

Very few movies capture as convincingly as A Separation does the ways in which seemingly honorable decisions can lead to interpersonal conflict -- even disaster.

To say the piercing Iranian film A Separation is about divorce is a bit like saying The Wizard of Oz is about a pair of slippers.

"A Separation" moves beyond one couple's sundering marriage to reveal growing rifts between generations, ideologies, religious mind-sets, genders and classes in contemporary Iran.

"A Separation" is a great movie, a look inside a world so foreign that it might as well be another planet, yet so universal that its observations are painfully familiar to anyone, anywhere.

Asghar Farhadi's emotionally epic movie is not just a masterpiece dramatically, it is a movie dramatically of its moment.

a brilliant, mesmerizing drama, incredibly well-acted by its ensemble cast

One of A Separation's many virtues is the way it gradually reveals, Rashomon-like, the complicated facts, half-truths, and lies that each character tells for perfectly legitimate reasons.

Finely crafted drama teems with conflicts involving class, generations, mental health and good old fashioned lying.

What is a sin? What is right? When is it okay to lie? All these questions swirl in a movie that might possibly be the best foreign language film at this year's Academy Awards.

"A Separation" is a plaintive fable of the human condition that unites us.

One of the year's best reveals life in Iran

A tragically familiar family drama whose heartbreaking "for want of a nail" sequence of events spirals out of control at an intimate and individual level.

A Separation shows the human struggle for respect and a better life. It's a struggle rife with human frailty. Asghar Farhadi is a sly writer and director, and leaves us with questions that are provocative and elusive.

Smart, provocative, and brimming with ungovernable human emotions.

A meandering, nerve-wracking, ultimately worthwhile tour of contemporary Iranian urban life.

Above all, Farhadi?s parable teaches that a rush to judgment inevitably turns back on the judge.

It's a portrait of an essential and sympathetic human dilemma, and in that it's both real and timeless in ways that transcend borders, cultures and languages.

Is it possible, the movie asks, that children, with their belief in absolutes, have purer moral compasses than their forced-to-compromise parents?

Partly a courtroom drama, partly a political satire and partly a twisty thriller that gradually draws you in and becomes more engrossing with each new revelation.

Expectedly, the volatility is penetrating, but the feature is methodical, stewing in every last moment of unease and contemplation, stretching to a point where Farhadi is practically lapping himself.

93% Hugo

"If you've ever wondered where your dreams come from, you look around... this is where they're made."Set in 1930s Paris, an orphan who lives in the walls of a train station is wrapped up in a mystery involving his late father and an automaton. REVIEWIt takes a while for Hugo to really get going, but it's certainly beautiful in the meantime. The film is a visual spectacle while each frame is an absolute joy to look at. You're taken through the intricate insides of various clocks at a train station; seeing their gears move as the use of steam adds just the right amount of mystery. It's not so much the fact that Hugo is slow because it isn't. There's this veil of mystery that isn't lifted until Hugo (Asa Butterfield) finally caves and tells his story. The various clocks and train station setting keeps you occupied and the long introduction with no dialogue is extremely noteworthy. It's just for nearly half the film, you have all these elements (clocks, the train station, a notebook, an automaton, and Hugo's father) without much of a connection. But it does all come together in extraordinary fashion. The cast is really superb. Asa Butterfield is so passionate and emotional. Those blue eyes of his tell the story better than words ever could. Chloe Grace Moretz is so optimistic and eager for a chance at an adventure. You can't help but adore the Isabelle character. Sacha Baron Cohen seems to step way out of his element here. The Station Inspector seems like a complete 180 from Bruno or Borat, but his sense of humor is still in his performance. He just happens to have a bit more depth in comparison. Ben Kingsley's Georges M?li?s goes through such a transformation in the film though that he's able to display such a wide range of emotion. He plays the broken old man impeccably. There are times when movies affect you in a way that let you know they are special. For me, it's like I'm suddenly overcome by a wide range of emotions that make me want to laugh, cry, scream at the top of my lungs, and the overwhelming sensation of never wanting that moment or the movie to end. I'm not ashamed to say I felt that a few times during Hugo. James Cameron called Hugo a masterpiece and it's really difficult to argue with that. There isn't a weak point in the cast, the visuals are outstanding, and you find yourself connecting to the story. You're sucked into this world right from the start.

Bring it Back!: Classic Steel Cage Matches

With a monumental WrestleMania Hell in a Cell Match between The Undertaker and Triple H looming large on the horizon, the entire WWE Universe has cold, hard steel on the mind. And while nothing may compare to the most intimidating structure in WWE history, perhaps the buzz of metal madness on The Grandest Stage of Them All will inspire WWE to bring back past steel cage incarnations into the main event fold. (PHOTOS)

Classic blue steel
For members of the WWE Universe, there?s something familiar and, dare we say, comforting about that classic blue steel cage from the late '80s and '90s. Made famous at WrestleMania II and on Saturday Night?s Main Event, the blue steel is an undisputed classic image. Being morphed into everything from video games to your official circa-1990 WWE ring play set, those blue steel bars are instantly recognizable as a WWE original. And while the chunky blues may evoke warm and fuzzy feelings of nostalgia by fans, it?s a safe bet that those sentiments are not shared by the Superstars who have done battle inside that same sapphire structure.

Designed primarily for climbing, the bars were sturdy and well built, and when a Superstar was launched into them, the blue steel won every time. Still, because of the ample foot-space allowed by the bars, launching off the top of the cage was just one of the many reasons we want to see this match brought back. We get chills just thinking about watching Tamina ? whose father, WWE Hall of Famer ?Superfly? Jimmy Snuka, made cage-diving a thing of legend in his day ? follow in her dad?s footsteps and leap off the top of this blue beauty.

Let the (war) games begin
In 1987, WCW?s Great American Bash incorporated ?WarGames: The Match Beyond? into competition. Featuring two teams and timed intervals, WarGames sure was fun to watch. A bevy of legendary competitors have experienced the match?s unique side-by-side double-cage structure. And after all team members were inside the steel enclosure, the ?Match Beyond? would begin, where the ways in which to win were simply stated, but brutally applied ? submission or surrender. This type of match is seemingly tailor-made to add a new twist on the traditional Five-on-Five Tag Team Match at a present-day Survivor Series.

Paint it, black
A wicked twist on the old-school baby blue cage was added at St. Valentine?s Day Massacre in 1999 in the midst of ?Stone Cold? Steve Austin's personal war with Mr. McMahon. A microcosm of the massive rivalry between The Texas Rattlesnake and his employer, the match itself featured standard cage rules. But, the black bars made everything different somehow. Like some kind of weird, inverted idol, the black bars took something beloved from our past and made it menacing; certainly fitting for the brutal bout that waged within its confines. This cage match might be the ideal environment to settle the heated rivalry between another disgruntled employee and his corporate overlord ? CM Punk vs. John Laurinaitis, anyone?

Who let the dogs ? in?
At Unforgiven 1999, the WWE Universe was treated to a ? let?s say unique ? steel cage experience. In the one-time-only Kennel from Hell Match, Al Snow battled Big Boss Man for the WWE Hardcore Championship. Like mixing peanut butter and chocolate, the Kennel combined two things the WWE Universe loves ? a blue-barred steel cage and a Hell in a Cell. Oh, yeah, and did we mention that there were dogs, too?

In order to win the match, not only did a Superstar have to escape the inner steel cage and the outer Cell, but in between the two structures sat Rottweilers, just chomping at the bit to get in on the action. Seriously, what?s not to love about this stipulation? While this match type may not be the most practical, just think about how the John Cena/Kane rivalry might have ended if their epic dispute had gone "to the dogs."

Three-tiered mayhem
Then there was WCW?s steel-structured eyesore known as Tower of Doom. Stacking three cages, one on top of the other, competitors would battle their way down to the bottom structure and ultimately, outside to safety. The bout began with two competitors engaged in battle in the top-most cage, and additional grapplers would enter after a set amount of time. Maybe it was the way the cages swayed whenever a competitor entered the fold, but part of the attraction of the pancake of pain was the fact that the steel monstrosity appeared highly unstable and everyone involved in the bout was at high risk throughout its duration. A match type made for high-flyers and hardcore heavies alike, we?d love to see Primo & Epico put their titles on the line in a three-tiered championship bout.

Like the Tower of Doom, we?ve stacked up enough steel cage evidence to make our case, so let?s hope the WWE listens and brings back any ? or all ? of these cage matches!

Some people at the rally?told reporters?they were promised two days off in return for attending. Many?were reluctant to explain why they came, The AP reported.

"I came here with friends. They said they would pay each of us 2,000 roubles ($67)," said a 21-year-old man who gave his name only as Alexander. He and his friends were brought into Moscow by bus from just outside the city.

Putin's campaign team, which portrays him as a strong leader and guarantor of stability, has failed to quell reports that many of the people at pro-Putin rallies are paid or coerced into attending by employers and trade unions.

Motorists protest against Putin in Moscow's streets

Wearing warm hats, scarves and coats on a chilly national holiday, the participants started marching along the banks of the Moscow River behind a long blue banner declaring: "Our vote for Putin."

The atmosphere was festive on Defender of the Fatherland Day, a holiday which honors the armed forces.

Thousands of people attended a march backing Vladimir Putin in Moscow, Russia, on Thursday. Russians will go to the polls on March 4.

The AFP news service estimated that 30,000 people attended the rally. However, the BBC cited Moscow police as putting the total at 130,000.

Police were out in force because the opposition communists and nationalists planned rallies in other parts of the capital.

A laid-back Yankee in trouble in Putin's court

The communists and nationalists also staged small rallies in several other cities across the vast country of more than 140 million people.

'Join us'
Putin has tried to discredit the protesters by accusing their leaders of being paid agents of the United States working to weaken Russia. His references on Thursday were more subtle as he called on all Russians who "cherish, care about and believe in" their motherland to unite.

"We ask everyone not to look abroad, not to run to the other side and not to deceive your motherland, but to join us," he said from a makeshift stage in a soccer stadium as a light snow fell on his bare head.

But he also warned the West: "We won't allow anyone to meddle in our affairs or impose their will upon us, because we have a will of our own."

If?Putin, a?former KGB officer, wins the election, he will extend his 12-year rule for another six years. Putin was president from 2000 until 2008, when he was barred by the constitution from running for a third successive term, but has remained dominant as prime minister.

The latest opinion poll this week showed he would win more than 50 percent of the votes on March 4, enough to avoid a second-round runoff. His rivals include nationalist Vladimir Zhirinovsky, communist Gennady Zyuganov and businessman Mikhail Prokhorov, who owns the New Jersey Nets.

Meet the NBA tycoon who wants to be Russia's president

Putin says many?people want him to return to the presidency; when he last held the office, Russians enjoyed an economic boom on the back of a surge in the price of oil, Russia's main export commodity.

After initially insulting the protesters who have taken part in opposition rallies sparked by allegations of fraud in a parliamentary election won by his party on Dec. 4,?Putin has allowed their main rallies to go ahead.

'Frozen fury': Thousands brave icy chill to protest in Moscow

But he has accused foreign governments of backing the opposition protesters and has met none of their main demands, including a rerun of December's election, the release of people the opposition call political prisoners and far-reaching political reforms.

The next opposition protest in Moscow is planned for Sunday.

If?Putin wins two more terms, he could stay in power until 2024. The opposition protesters say a growing number of Russians feel they have no say in the way Russia is run and that it is bad for any country to be led by one person for so long.

Solid Buckeyballs Detected In Space

astroengine writes with an excerpt from an article at Discovery: "For the first time, 'buckyballs' have been discovered in the cosmos in a solid form. Until now, the only evidence in space for the bizarre little hollow balls of carbon atoms have been in interstellar gases, but with the help of NASA's Spitzer Space Telescope, astronomers have discovered buckyballs accumulating and stacking atop one another to form solid particles. 'These buckyballs are stacked together to form a solid, like oranges in a crate,' said Nye Evans of Keele University in England, lead author of a paper appearing in the Monthly Notices of the Royal Astronomical Society. 'The particles we detected are minuscule, far smaller than the width of a hair, but each one would contain stacks of millions of buckyballs.'"

What?s the One-Word Secret to Online Marketing Success?

?

Would you like to know what one of the secrets to internet marketing success is? I?ll tell you in one word: consistency.

Many people are attracted to the idea of doing ecommerce. Some of these folks come to the internet with systematic thinking. They understand the importance of good training in doing whatever it is one sets out to do. This is commendable as it is important to analyze the whys and wherefores of the type of internet business that you plan to get involved in. It is vital, however, to realize when you?ve done enough analytical thought and training and that it?s time to step out and do the thing you?ve been preparing for.

There are those who will put into action what they?ve trained for. Unfortunately, they do not take consistent action. They do a little advertising here, a little over there. They sign up for resources that they plan to utilize but end up never using the resources. They try their hand on one thing first. When that effort does not produce the desired results as quickly as hoped, then they move on to the next thing that looks promising.

Then there are those people that do realize that consistency is vital, but they don?t have a clear understanding of what they need to be doing. They do not have the training needed. These are the people whom you notice spending money and time to blast out a replicated company website to whoever will bother taking a look at it. These people have not learned the essentials of internet marketing and attraction marketing. They often wind up frustrated, having lost time and money with little reward to show for it.

Successful internet marketers are able to mix the training they?ve had with consistent practice. They learn different marketing strategies and then they put these into action. As they become skilled in one method, they add another strategy to their cache of marketing weaponry. They schedule their activities so that everyday there is productive effort made towards their online businesses. There are certain days set aside for creating Squidoo lenses. Friends are added to MySpace or Direct Matches at regular intervals. The list is varied and unlimited. What?s important is that something productive is being done consistently to advance their online businesses.

There?s a simple equation to illustrate what we?ve been talking about.

Much training + little action = very little.

Little training + lots of action = disappointment.

Right amount of training + consistent effort = massive predictable success

Many people are ready to take consistent action; it?s the training they lack. Well, there are several sites one can go to for training in?online marketing. Just do a little research to find them. What?s important is putting the training into action afterward?in a consistent manner.

Q & A: Cheap Flights to Scotland in the winter?

Question by Niamh ? Cheap flights to Scotland in the winter
I plan to go to Scotland this year?s Christmas / Hogmanay period. Since then, it?s winter, it is usually out of season, but the prices of holidays is not as cheap as I thought they would. Does anyone have any suggestions or offers of sites for cheap flights? My dates are flexibles.Oh yes, I live in Phoenix, AZ.Meilleure reply:
To reply

Yankees34
as a matter of fact, public holidays and summer months are the most expensive times to travel. It is no secret website or something to get cheaper tickets, but remember to buy tickets for 8-12 weeks prior to departure in order to obtain the cheapest ticket possible, because you leave 8 to 16 weeks before departure to start looking for 16 weeks before you see the trend in prices and buy if you think it is cheaper, which should be about 10-12 weeks mark.

What do you think? Answer it!

Billiards, Great Game or the Greatest | ABC Article Directory

Back in the old days, before table billiards was invented, people would play lawn games like croquet. Certainly lawn games are not the greatest games in the world, simply by way of the fact you have to rely on faithless weather conditions.

King Louis the XIV, or one of his decedents, decided that trusting the earth not to rain so he could play croquet was simply not going to do. So he commissioned his slaves-he didn't really commission them, it was more of a command- to create him an indoor version of croquet.

The result was a very simplistic version of table billiards, but instead of pockets in the corners and sides of the table there were little blocks to avoid and rings to shoot the balls through. It was basically a stupid version of croquet made to fit on a table.

King Louis loved it, and it was instantly one of the kingdoms greatest hits. You have to also understand this is France back in the mid-1400s, they didn't really have a lot going on for them.

That is the brief history of how billiards came about, intriguing that the scuzzy bar game was actually developed in royalty. With time it has developed, if it would have stayed the game it was back then it would come nowhere close to getting the "greatest game" title or even a "great game" title.

Ever since then people have been implementing new techniques and developing new billiards games, there are so many different billiards games you can't even count them all on one hand. Each game comes with unique and specific strategies, and then there are the underlying billiard techniques.

Strategy is going to be last learned, like with any other game. First you have to learn the rules of the game, and depending on the billiards game you play they will be quite different.

Then you start developing technique. This is a major reason billiards may be the greatest game in existence.

A lot of games and sports will test one's ability to push themselves to the edge of their capacity; however, billiards tests subtle skill and discipline. You do not have to be macho body builder that can throw a javelin 300 yards to be able to play this.

The playing field is level to everyone; it really is simply a measure of technique and skill. Of course some people are going to be better than others, but it is not because they have some genetic or presupposed trait that gives them an unfair advantage.

Being that the genre of sport billiards is so extensive, that it provides even advantage to each player, and is stimulating in a unique way, it is fair to say that this truly is the greatest game.

Ex-"Survivor" producer to stand trial for wife's death (Reuters)

LOS ANGELES, Feb 15 (TheWrap.com) ? Bruce Beresford-Redman, the former producer of "Survivor" accused of killing his wife during a family vacation in Cancun, Mexico, will stand trial in that country, Los Angeles station KNBC TV reports.

On Wednesday a judge in Cancun announced that Beresford-Redman, who was extradited to Mexico from Los Angeles last week after more than a year in U.S. custody, will face trial for aggravated homicide, and ordered the former reality TV producer to remain in custody.

A trial date has not yet been set.

Beresford-Redman's attorney told TheWrap that "the judge's decision is not unexpected," and that he always felt that Beresford-Redman would have to stand trial in Mexico. (Beresford-Redman waived his right to appeal the extradition.)

The attorney added that Beresford-Redman "is innocent of the charges, and he is confident that he will be acquitted."

Beresford-Redman is accused of killing his wife, 41-year-old restaurant owner Monica Burgos, while the couple vacationed with their two children at a Cancun resort in April 2010. Burgos' body was found in a sewer pipe near the resort; prosecutors said that she appeared to be strangled. Hotel staff reported that the couple had a heated argument during their stay.

The producer was arrested in Los Angeles by U.S. marshals in November 2010.

During a July 2011 extradition hearing, prosecutors argued that Beresford-Redman killed Burgos for insurance money and custody of the children.

"After nearly 15 months in United States custody, Bruce will finally be returned to Mexico to stand trial for Monica's murder," Burgos' family said in a statement on the day of his extradition. "This day marks a major milestone in our journey to ensure justice for Monica."

Romney struggling to attract white working class

Republican presidential candidate, former Massachusetts Gov. Mitt Romney greets supporters at a campaign rally in Kentwood, Mich., Wednesday, Feb. 15, 2012. (AP Photo/Gerald Herbert)

(AP) ? Republican Mitt Romney is faltering with white working-class voters crucial to his party's drive to capture the White House, even as he tries to fend off a rising GOP challenger, Rick Santorum, who wields strong blue-collar appeal.

The wealthy former Bain Capital chief has led his rivals by comfortable margins among white college graduates, according to combined polls of voters in the first five states that held presidential nominating contests. But the exit and entry surveys showed only a modest Romney advantage among whites who lack college degrees, the yardstick analysts typically use to define the working class.

The imbalance was most pronounced among less-educated white men, with whom his lead disappeared.

More recent polling bears out the same problem for Romney. According to a national poll of Republicans released this week by the nonpartisan Pew Research Center, the former Massachusetts governor has a slender lead over Santorum among whites with degrees but trails him among working-class whites, 36 percent to 23 percent.

Romney's lukewarm performance with less-educated whites could haunt him in the Feb. 28 Michigan primary. Though it's Romney's native state, Santorum is using his upbringing in the western Pennsylvania manufacturing town of Butler, his rougher-edged style and his "Made in America" proposals for boosting U.S. manufacturing to woo Michigan's many blue-collar voters.

Romney's weakness with working-class whites is a liability he would also have to address as the nominee. GOP presidential candidates often need big margins from this group to offset weaker support from others.

"It has to be a concern," said GOP pollster John McLaughlin, who is not working for a presidential candidate. "What these voters are looking for is, 'Tell me how you're going to help my life.' If we can't articulate that, then we're going to lose."

Some voters view Romney as "an ultra-wealthy individual," said David Hill, another GOP pollster who is not working in the presidential race. "They have a sense he cannot identify with ordinary Americans. He'll have ample time over the course of campaigning in the general election to rectify that."

The sometimes-staid Romney is already trying to do just that.

He recently described his father as a carpenter who could spit nails out of his mouth "pointy end forward," without mentioning that George Romney became CEO of the American Motors Corp. and governor of Michigan. He also described how rising fuel and food prices have been "tough for middle-income families in America," and said the country needs a president with "experience in a factory or experience in a workplace" who can understand how to create jobs.

Santorum, son and grandson of Italian immigrants, has a more personal connection to working-class voters that he's always ready to discuss. He cites his childhood living in apartments provided by the Veterans Administration, where his father worked as a psychologist, and never misses an opportunity to discuss his grandfather.

"My grandfather was a coal miner. I grew up in a steel town, with blue-collar roots," the now well-off former Pennsylvania senator said Tuesday in Boise, Idaho.

Strategists and political scientists attribute Romney's problem partly to his personal wealth and financier background and a string of statements his opponents have used to characterize him as an out-of-touch patrician. He has jokingly called himself unemployed, said he knows what it is like to fear a pink slip and characterized his $373,000 earnings from paid speeches as "not very much" money.

Romney has also been hurt by his tax returns. They show he pays around 15 percent of his income in taxes ? less than many middle-income families ? and has placed some assets in Swiss bank accounts and other exotic locations like the Cayman Islands.

"There's no identification, no connection that he makes with some of these voters," said Terry Madonna, a political scientist and pollster at Franklin & Marshall College.

Campaigning Thursday in Michigan, Romney renewed his call for stronger "right-to-work" laws, which bar workplaces from requiring employees to join a labor union.

At a roundtable discussion in Monroe, Romney also was careful to praise unions, citing the carpenters' union for helping workers improve their skills. "But I believe union and non-union shops should compete on a level playing field" for government contracts, Romney said.

Romney pollster Neil Newhouse said his candidate's early showing with the working class has been "a soft spot" because Santorum and Gingrich have targeted those same voters. That won't translate to Election Day, Newhouse said.

"The general election will be about President Obama and his accomplishments and lack thereof," Newhouse said.

Combined figures for the first five states to vote ? Iowa, New Hampshire, South Carolina, Florida and Nevada ? show ideology was also a factor. Just 22 percent of Romney's votes came from working-class whites who consider themselves very conservative. Santorum got 52 percent of his votes from that group and former House Speaker Newt Gingrich, Romney's biggest rival at the time, got 45 percent.

In those early contests, Romney led Gingrich by 43 percent to 28 percent among whites who completed college, the polls show.

That gap shrank to a 39 percent-to-33 percent Romney advantage among whites without college degrees. White men who haven't graduated college tilted 37 percent to 33 percent toward Gingrich.

Romney's 20-percentage-point advantage over Gingrich among white female college graduates in those states falls slightly, to 15 points, among less educated white women.

Santorum swept GOP presidential contests in Colorado, Minnesota and Missouri last week. There were no exit polls in those races, but the combined surveys for the first five states show Santorum, who had not yet built momentum as a candidate, trailing both Romney and Gingrich badly among white working-class voters.

Ironically, Romney's problem echoes an even more serious weakness that candidate Barack Obama showed in 2008 when trying to reach those same working-class white voters.

Obama lost them badly in the Democratic primaries to rival Hillary Rodham Clinton before losing them by 18 percentage points to GOP candidate Sen. John McCain that November. Obama remedied that by coming close among white college graduates and prevailing overwhelmingly among minorities.

Republicans want to drive their margin among working-class whites as high as possible this year to offset Obama's advantage with minorities. Working-class whites comprise around 4 in 10 voters in recent general elections.

Obama campaign spokesman Ben LaBolt says Romney will be hurt among these voters by his background at Bain, the private equity firm, whose corporate buyouts sometimes eliminated jobs.

"The essential question of the election is, 'Who's going to restore economic security for the middle class?'" LaBolt said.

The data is based on surveys conducted for The Associated Press and the television networks by Edison Research as voters arrived at or left randomly selected sites in this year's GOP caucuses and primaries in Iowa, New Hampshire, South Carolina, Florida and Nevada. The results of the five surveys were combined and each was weighted to reflect its share of the votes cast.

The combined survey involved interviews with 11,376 voters and had a margin of sampling error of plus or minus 1 percentage point.

Private funeral for Houston set for Saturday in NJ (AP)

NEWARK, N.J. ? Whitney Houston's funeral will be held Saturday in the church where she first showcased her singing talents as a child, her family choosing to remember her in a private service rather than in a large event at an arena.

The owner of the Whigham Funeral Home said Tuesday that the funeral will be held at noon at Newark's New Hope Baptist Church, which seats up to 1,500.

The family said no public memorial service is planned at this time. Officials had discussed the possibility of opening up the Prudential Center, a major sports and entertainment venue, for a memorial, but the funeral home said it had been ruled out.

Funeral home owner Carolyn Whigham said the church service will be by invitation only, reflecting the family's decision to keep the memorial more personal.

"They have shared her for 30-some years with the city, with the state, with the world. This is their time now for their farewell," she said.

"The family thanks all the fans, the friends and the media, but this time is their private time," she said.

Houston, 48, died Feb. 11 at a hotel in Beverly Hills, Calif., just hours before she was set to perform at producer Clive Davis' pre-Grammy Awards bash. Officials say she was underwater and apparently unconscious when she was pulled from a bathtub.

After an autopsy Sunday, authorities said there were no indications of foul play and no obvious signs of trauma on Houston. It could be weeks, however, before the coroner's office completes toxicology tests to establish the cause of death.

Los Angeles County coroner's assistant chief Ed Winter said bottles of prescription medicine were found in the room. He would not give details except to say: "There weren't a lot of prescription bottles. You probably have just as many prescription bottles in your medicine cabinet."

Her body was returned to New Jersey late Monday.

Houston was born in Newark and was raised in nearby East Orange. She began singing as a child at New Hope Baptist Church, where her mother, Grammy-winning gospel singer Cissy Houston, led the music program for many years. Her cousin singer Dionne Warwick also sang in its choir.

Houston's family asked Tuesday that any donations in her memory be sent to the arts-focused public school that she attended as a child and that was named after her in the late 1990s.

In lieu of flowers, they said mourners should donate to the Whitney Houston Academy of Creative and Performing Arts in East Orange, a school serving students in kindergarten through eighth grade.

Houston attended the school as a girl when it was named the Franklin School and was a regular visitor for many years afterward. On Monday, students held an outdoor service in her memory.

An impromptu memorial for Houston was held Sunday during a sadness-tinged Grammys, with Jennifer Hudson saluting her memory with a performance of "I Will Always Love You." Viewership for the awards show soared over last year by 50 percent, with about 40 million viewers tuning in to the program on CBS.

On Tuesday, a steady stream of well-wishers continued to stop at the New Hope Baptist Church, where the front fence was adorned with dozens of flowers, balloons and oversized cards, some with hundreds of signatures and condolences written on them.

Several people expressed disappointment that a public memorial had not been scheduled. But they also said they understood why the funeral was being kept private.

"Maybe at some point down the road, they might do something," said B.J. Frazier, of East Orange, who said she had performed as a singer with one of Houston's aunts. "But it's like they're saying today, they shared her for a long time and they just want her to themselves for now."

A sensation from her first album, Houston was one of the world's best-selling artists from the mid-1980s to the late 1990s, turning out such hits as "I Wanna Dance With Somebody," "How Will I Know," "The Greatest Love of All" and "I Will Always Love You." But as she struggled with drugs, her majestic voice became raspy, and she couldn't hit the high notes.

Houston left behind one child, daughter Bobbi Kristina Brown, 18, from her marriage to singer Bobby Brown.

GUATEMALA CITY ? Guatemala's first president with a military background in 25 years said Tuesday the drug war can't be won with arms alone, and pledged that his administration will focus on fighting hunger, which he called a security problem.

In an interview with The Associated Press one day after he promised to propose legalizing drugs in Guatemala, President Otto Perez Molina said the Central American country isn't following U.S. orders, despite American opposition to legalization.

"We are not doing what the United States says, we are doing what we have to do," said Perez, who was elected on promises of an "iron-fist" approach to rampant crime and surprised observers by proposing drug legalization.

Perez, a retired army general who took office one month ago, said his proposal to legalize drugs does not represent an about face from his campaign, in which he promised to get touch on crime.

He said he has always focused on a more comprehensive approach for addressing one of the highest murder rates in the world.

"Hunger is also violence, and is also a security problem," he said.

The outside world "has only focused on the fact that I am a retired general and participated in the domestic armed conflict," he said, referring to Guatemala's 1960-1996 civil war, in which an estimated 200,000 people were killed.

Guatemala needs "to find alternate ways of fighting drug trafficking. In the last 30 years with a traditional combat with arms and deaths, it can't be done, and we have to be open to viable alternatives."

On Monday, Perez said he will try to win regional support for drug legalization at an upcoming summit of Central American leaders next month.

The U.S. Embassy in Guatemala issued a statement Sunday saying that legalizing drugs wouldn't stop transnational gangs that traffic not only drugs, but also people and weapons.

Drug cartels have taken over large swathes of Guatemala and other Central American countries, fueling some of the highest murder rates in the world. A May 2011 report by the U.S. Congressional Research Service said that 95 percent of all cocaine entering the United States flows through Mexico and its waters, with 60 percent of that cocaine having first transited through Central America.

Authorities say both the Zetas and the Sinaloa cartels from Mexico are running and processing drugs in Guatemala and may be competing for territory, especially in the province of Peten near the border with Mexico.
